There may come a time where you want to completely reset your Windows 10 software back to a clean installation. Perhaps you forgot your password. Maybe you’ve been infected by viruses or malware. Or, maybe you’ve changed so many Windows settings that you just want to start fresh. Whatever the case, there is a simple way to reset your computer with a clean installation of Windows. Be advised, however, that this will remove any and all saved data from your computer permanently. You will not be able to recover any previously saved files once you begin this procedure, so please be sure to back up your data prior to performing the following procedure.

BACKUP YOUR DATA! All files will be permanently deleted following this procedure.

Power on your computer and let it boot to the Windows Logon screen.

From the screen where Windows asks for your password follow these steps:

  • There are two SHIFT keys on your keyboard. Press and hold the SHIFT key on the LEFT side of the keyboard and DO NOT LET THE SHIFT KEY GO.
  • In the bottom right corner of the screen you will find a POWER icon. Click the Power icon and select “RESTART” making sure that you are still holding down the LEFT SHIFT key.
  • The next screen that appears will provide several options. You may now release the SHIFT key once this screen is displayed.
  • Click on “TROUBLESHOOT”
  • Select “RESET THIS PC”
  • Select “REMOVE EVERYTHING”
  • Select “ONLY THE DRIVE WHERE WINDOWS IS INSTALLED”
  • Select “JUST REMOVE MY FILES”
  • Select “RESET

Your computer will now start the reset process. The entire process will take about 30 minutes. Once it’s done, it will be as if you’ve installed Windows for the first time.
